The Medical Insurance Billing Specialist is responsible for the billing and follow up of insurance claims for physician office and hospital charges using an electronic practice management system. Will also be cross-trained in entering payments from patients and insurance companies, posting office and hospital charges and for obtaining referrals and pre-authorizations. Candidates must be a strong team player and have excellent communication, organization and follow-up skills with the ability to multi-task. Working efficiently to ensure timely filing of claims and collaborating on initiatives to enhance the financial and operational performance of the practice are key goals. Previous medical billing/coding experience in cardiology is preferred.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Primary responsibility will be the working of denials, rejections and unpaid insurance claims, focusing on timely filing, refiling and appealing of charges.
  • Answers incoming calls from patients or guarantors and assists with questions on statements or balances.
  • Verify insurance eligibility via practice management system, payer portal and/or by phone.
  • Knowledge of HCFA-1500 paper claim forms and 837 electronic equivalent.
  • Utilize insurance websites to accurately review remittances, check claim status, request payment recoupments, and file appeals.
  • Confidentially maintain and update patient account information in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of all interactions and actions.
  • Cross training within the billing department to provide coverage as needed for charge capture, posting of insurance and patient payments and obtaining referrals and pre-authorizations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

  • Knowledge and experience using CPT and ICD-10 coding.
  • Knowledge of insurance eligibility and benefits (deductible, copay, co-insurance).
  • Knowledge of reading insurance company Explanation of Benefits and understanding rejections/denials and what to do to correct them.
  • At least 2 years of medical billing experience is a must, cardiology experience a bonus.
  • Knowledge of and experience using payer resources for referrals and authorizations.
  • Positive, driven attitude with a willingness to go the extra mile to help patients and to help the office achieve financial and operational success.
  • Must be able to develop and maintain professional, service-oriented working relationships with patients, physicians, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Excellent communication skills, oral and written.
  • High School graduate or general education degree.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $11.00 - $17.00 per hour

  • Consults with credit manager or other appropriate personnel when client credit requests exceed established guidelines.
  • Monitors accounts receivable and cash receipt reports.
  • Performs other related duties, as required.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
